One of the most symbolic places of India is the Taj Mahal. It is one place that almost everyone can recognize easily by seeing a picture. Located in Agra in the province of Uttar Pradesh, this historic building has been a favorite place for tourists for several centuries. This white marble mausoleum was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan after the death of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It was designed by an accomplished architect of that time, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The name of the place means the “crown of palaces”. This place with its striking beauty and romantic history is rightfully known as the “Jewel of Muslim Art in India”.There is quite a story behind the construction of the striking building which came to be known as the Taj palace. In 1631 when Shah Jahan’s third wife Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to his fourteenth child, the Emperor was grief stricken.
